Sex is our impassioned response to death and rot. Death is the gateway to regeneration; therefore Death and Sex are inextricably linked. Sex is the drumbeat at the center of the psyche; the hand that beats the drum is Death.

Enthralled by Eros and Thanatos, my entire being vibrates with the need to imbue the canvas with the searing heat of sex, the bone-chilling reality of death. These paintings are the embodiment of yearning, overwhelming and unfulfilled, of impossible desire.

Jonathan Herbert's highly charged paintings explore the eternal themes of sex, death, and redemption. The Kaddish series consists of loving paintings of his wife, dying and dead of cancer.
