Under the hood
papers and slides and polaroids and videos and sketches and notes
These little squares display just some of the working record of fifty-four years: the material that accumulates around a studio practice. Nothing on this page is in chronological order. A SoHo Sunday morning sits near a sketch made through the windshield of a Checker cab, a studio Polaroid near a notebook page from another decade. The route runs through Boston, Antwerp, downtown New York, DUMBO, and Sarasota, and the people in these images are the friends, painters, writers, and passengers of those years. In 2026 the Smithsonian Archives of American Art accessioned the Jonathan Herbert Papers, circa 1960–2020.
